1992 - The Year of the Deaf
1992 is not a year on which I shall look back with undiluted pleasure. Newspapers were printing stories about the Queen's private wealth. And then the Queen had to watch, standing in the rain, crying, as part of Windsor Castle burned down. It was a dramatic low point, the mark of an irreversible shift in the relationship between subjects and sovereign. Five years later, things got lower still.
