The first transatlantic cable was built in 1858. It cut the time to send a message across the ocean from weeks or months to just minutes. When they did the first cable that broke up, Tiffany's actually had the remains of that cable when they got over to the United States. And then they cut it up into little bits and sold them as souvenirs.
