No matter where you're planning on running Kubernetes long term, Google Cloud Platform is a good place to start. You don't pay anything for container engine itself; you do still pay for the virtual machines that you're running. It's just so much easier to tell whether you even want to spend the time to set it up on your own stuff. So I'd highly recommend that no matter where you plan on deploying.
