What We're Learning From Tiananmen Square Protests

There are clear parallels that the Tiananmen Square protests, they were originally largely made up of students. The Communist Party really put in place this stability maintenance machine and fearsome internal security force to try and sort of knit dissent in the bud before it even started. By Monday night, things had evolved and there was a much higher police presence on the streets in Beijing and Shanghai. We saw some easing of COVID regulations and more censorship online to stop people seeing what was happening.
