Maoist China became a particularly strong reference point for black radicals from the mid through the early part of the late 20th century. The Chinese and Cubans willingness to meet forced with force also made these revolutions attractive to black radicals in the age of non violent passive resistance. One really important figure here is Robert Williams, who organized an advocated arm self defense and then under constant threat fled to Cuba in 1961 for political asylum.
