Morsorksky's Baba Yaga is based on design Hartmann made to honor Tsar Alexander II. The work was meant to be a monumental gate in the ancient Russian massive style. Despite his genteel reputation, Ravel could write brash music when he wanted to. At the time of writing this piece, Kiev was part of the Russian Empire.
