For most of history, death was omnipresent. In a world without death, there is no heaven, there is no hell,. There is no incarnation. So religions like christianity and the hindus just make absolutely no sense. And our basic attitude now is that death increasingly just a technical problem. If people die, it's because not of a divine will, and not because of some the forces of nature. It's because of human failure. We don't raise our hands to god and tell ourselves that this might be punishment from our misdeeds. No we assume that humans have the power to overcome this - if we still have an epidemic, it's because somebody made a mistake...
