Sally Kohn: I thought something that your book did very well is identify the actual kind of shared material basis for that contradictory coalition between northern workers and southern planters. Democratic officials swore over and over to protect their liberty, against threats from well born financiers and haughty abolitionists alike. And i think that one thing that listeners might not have understood as clearly until they read your book, is that for northern workers, the fear of emancipation was also the fear of competition from freed blacks.
