Asteroid City is set kind of provisionally in the world of science fantasy or fiction which is about looking forward. So it's simultaneously about attempting to look forward while being rooted in the past. The black and white the reminder of early days of TV which could be almost taken back to the Mercury theater in some ways. That's what it juxtaposition the past and future.
