Tolkien conveys sensory experiences in a way that is incredibly vivid and he's able to do it. This is a real brief but very clear example of that. We discover that while Mary thought he loved mountains, these particular mountains not so much. It's one thing for mountains to be at the edge of stories, right? But here they're looming over him, intimidating and heavy. He wants to retreat to a quiet room by a fire in order to get away from the sheer scale of things.
