Buddhism is often misunderstood by a lot of people. When you're anchored in the present moment, you cannot suffer. No states are permanent, except for your beingness. And if we're to extend this out into a more spiritual philosophy, your soul, that's the only thing that's real here. Everything else is an illusion. So as you continue to look at your depression, your stress inside of you, it starts to melt away, turn into peace. Once again, you're now anchor and then peace, joy, and enthusiasm come in naturally because you're not so identified with your thoughts.
