The La Brea Tarpits

The last 50,000 years of Los Angeles history preserved in asphalt or tar. This naturally occurring asphalt is uniquely at the surface here at the La Brea Tarpits. LA was underwater under the sea for most of its history. And so it's really only recently popped out of the ocean. It bubbles up into the buildings around us. The oil has been finding its way here for the last 50,00 years and continues to this day.
