The Rise and Fall of the National Union Party
President andrew jonson was running for re-election in 1866. He hoped to forge a coalition of democrats and conservative republicans that could win control of congress Or at least gain enough seats to prevent over rides of his v toes. The national union convention praised president jonson attacked the radical republicans And encouraged voters to elect candidates who supported the immediate Readmission of all former confederate states. But when jonson entered the radical strongholds of the midwest he crumpled before hostile crowds.
