President andrew jonson was running for re-election in 1866. He hoped to forge a coalition of democrats and conservative republicans that could win control of congress Or at least gain enough seats to prevent over rides of his v toes. The national union convention praised president jonson attacked the radical republicans And encouraged voters to elect candidates who supported the immediate Readmission of all former confederate states.
