Discourse on Colonialism - Aimé Césaire

Red Menace

CHAPTER

Colonization Dehumanizes the Most Civilized Man

Cesar is looking throughout all of these European traditions, often praised as humanitarian, theological, or progressive, and finding within them the kernel of Nazism. He also looks to the words of several prominent reverends and ministers who use Christianity to argue that colonialism serves God's purposes. None of these obviously cruel, violent, and domineering ideas have been criticized extensively by Europeans. Hitler again was seen as an aberrant threat; yet these men who said the same things as Hitler did were not only tolerated, but they were praised. The silence on behalf of Europeans towards colonial society itself implicates all of Europe.
