The Effect of Silence on the Perception of Sound

Our brain packages sounds into events and this is called event representation. So if you are listening to music and then someone talks over it, you perceive separate events. The researchers of this paper did a test that was very similar to a test involving tones but they replaced the tones with silences. This helped us to establish that we do interpret sounds as events.
