Tolstoy's Alternative Way of Life

Tolstoy is looking to bring into view an alternative, but it's not an alternative way of life. He doesn't tell us how to do that. There's no moral prescriptions here. But there is a sense in which there's a contrast in these last moments. It would be an act of nihilism to write the book if this were simply something that was going to happen to you at the moment of death.
