The Principle of Necessity
Machiavelli's main principle is the necessity of uno solo, one alone. He says that people who try to be moral will come to ruin because they live among those who are not moral. The best gets you into trouble and doesn't guarantee you success by any means. So the best needs to be replaced by necessity.
