Bobby Duffy is a professor of public policy at King's College in London. His new book Why We're Wrong About Nearly Everything explains why we get so many things wrong. He says people are drawn to vivid, unusual stories and they take up more space in our brain when told by someone who tells them something negative. People overestimate the number of teenage girls getting pregnant each year compared with their actual numbers. They also think that 17% of the population are Muslim rather than only 1%. But crime rates have gone down across 30 countries where it has actually been on the rise.
