The Conservative Party in 66
In 1966, there were 11 new members of Parliament on the Conservative benches. The gallant applied to people who had held a fuel rank in the military. I think that was a formative part of post-war politics. Non-commissioned officers came out and became the trade union leaders. But in the end, they'd fought together. And you can't escape. Willy Whitelaw and Peter Carrington regaded guards' officers at some of the toughest battles. They couldn't bring themselves to talk about workers and shirkers or all that terrible sort of jargon.
