The Story of the Songhai
Eight thousand portuguese soldiers were killed and 15 thousand captured. Portugal was virtually beheaded in a single day. This resulted in a succession crisis of their own that led to their becoming part of a union with spain for the next 60 years. The moroccans were understandably ecstatic. They had decisively defeated their greatest rival. But the victory had all but emptied their treasury. And so morocco seized its chance.
