The Importance of Aggressiveness in the War
Nimitz put a clause in Halsey's waters that if he has a chance to destroy the enemy fleet, then that becomes his primary task. And of course, Halsey did not need any encouragement to be very aggressive. He was going to do this anyhow. So for all those reasons, he decided to take the entire fleet and go north. But there was no follow on plan after it had finished annihilating whatever was north. That comes into play later on when Karita has to make his mind up what he's going to do about San Bernardino Strait.
