The Importance of Phonemic Awareness in Reading Instruction

I did not think that there was a possibility that students didn't understand words were made up of sounds. But I actually had many kids that thought reading was reading memorizing words as whole visual units. So if I can do that quickly and automatically through the air, and I also am receiving explicit phonics instruction, that is going to allow me to become a more automatic decoder of print. That's where that fluency and automaticity comes in. We really do want to make sure we're making that connection for students to see how this can help them as readers and scholars.
