Simple Rules for Slicing Up a Manifold
There are ways of slicing the manifold up into three dimensional submanifolds. There are very simple rules that can tell you, given the way that one of those such slices is decorated, how other slices will be decorated. For example, there are simple rules that tell you where there are particles and what kinds of particles there are in our world. It's not true that for every particle that ever shows up in New York, it has to show up sometime in Los Angeles. This is a really there is a regularity of the form for each particle that shows up at 3 p.m. or 4 p.m., says Hawking.
