Lacan was mostly engaged with Levi Strauss and sort of structuralist reading of Freud. Whether you think Lacan made great advances by bringing in formal linguistics or though mathematics, that's still an open question. I don't know if it really helped turn psychoanalysis into a science... The real itself cannot be mathematically formalised completely. That's the academic prejudice to think it can reduce the real to the symbolic. So Lacan starts talking about the whole on the symbolic where the real use of error and emerges and sort of surprises us in various ways.
