There was not a single majority opinion in this case for the justices contended that any racial quota system supported by the government violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The player here, Justice Lewis Powell, agreed and he cast a deciding vote ordering the medical school at UC Davis to admit Baki. In other words, colleges can consider an applicant's race in this holistic way but you can't set seats aside for racial minorities.
