In 18 50, congress passed a strengthened fugitive slave law that required northern officials to assist slave catchers. Harriet became a conductor and made around 13 trips back to maryland to help get people to freedom. In his third autobiography, frederick douglas wrote about how he also worked for the underground railroad. Evidence suggests harriet and a group of escaped slaves stayed at his house as one of the underground railroad stops on their way to canada.
