At the age of eight years old, Dexter went to work with a farmer in Malden. He was there for about 11 months learning the trade before going to Boston. By the 1760s, Dexter's Boston teachers had monopolized the art of crafting something called Moroccan leather. The product was extremely valuable and came from goat skin from animals down in Nigeria.
