Piracy on the Page
Four Thought
The Importance of Protecting Language
Linguists used to call anything they considered an undesirable word a barbarism, but this was usually a matter of taste and because the wording question was formed from one of those pesky foreign languages. There is no accepted concept or simple term people can turn to if they want to challenge this phenomenon. What's needed is a precise term everyone can readily use when they see words being overtly abused. I love the English language I inherited far too much to watch it being disboiled by pirates. Piracy is a concept everyone understands and it meets the need perfectly. It allows us all to focus on the linguistic chaos caused instead of on the hostility being provoked.
