The Fourth Crusade: A History of Venice
Douglas: Besides Constantinople, I think one city that magicians need to know more about is the city of Venice. He says in 1171, Emperor Manuel I of the Byzantine Empire did a dirty on Venice by basically imprisoning all of the Venetian merchants and traders in Constantinople. Douglas: The Soreen Republic as Venice is known took this very, very seriously. They feared that their trade as well as economic influence would be greatly disrupted. And so they launched what is called the fourth crusade. This was Western Latin Christians attacking Eastern Greek Christians.
