The Importance of Timing in the Story
I based him a lot on my own feelings about being an adolescent and I've never written about a character with scoliosis before that was a huge part of my experience growing up. There are things about Merrick that I respect and find fascinating as a survivor he knows how to ingratiate himself which is a big part of survival in a hostile world. His need to be loved and affirmed was something that I I guess is probably at the core of every character that I have conjured but that in Mark felt so obvious and pure and so obvious and perverse at the same time I think I aligned myself with Mark although I don't like the way that his I don't really want him
