The History of Martyrdom and Early Christianity

The history of martyrdom and early Christianity does seem to have been exaggerated, doesn't it? If you have a saying to us traditionally a martyr and the chronology doesn't add up, then it was a local persecution. The Vatican will quietly remove saints from the martyrology when it's not shown or when it's seems fairly apparent that there's not really much to go on apart from just the tradition.
