The crew of the Essex were divided into three whale boats, each holding seven men. The only special item given the captain Pollard was the ship's musket while the mates were only given pistols. Each boat received 200 pounds of hard tack, 65 gallons of water and two tortoises. They wanted to have some goods to give the people that they were searching for.
