The Stoic Model of Human Action and Motivation

Augustine thinks that even the Stoics should have known better because Plato was able to see that it's rational to believe in an afterlife. And so that's part of the reason why he's hard on the Stoics for not building in that second piece of the puzzle. He says several times that the Platonists, even though they're not Christians, are preferable to all the other pagan schools. That's in part because they do have this rational belief in the afterlife.
