There's a million studies showing that our memories are hugely unreliable or highly reconstructive. Sometimes in some odd cases, the person comes to his persuaded that they did a crime they never did and confesses. They don't confess because they're coerced in any simple sense. They confess because they have had a false memory of the crime implanted.
