James Wells was a brilliant actor. This acting would stand up in a modern film today. I think James Wells genuinely picked him because of his startling possibilities of his face. And then this is absolutely true. Although it sounds like a scene from a biopic, this is absolutely how it happened. We were in a carriage in my imagination. It's like the Sydney Padgett illustration, where they're sitting on either sides of a carriage. The Basa Rapo and Nigel Bruce films were our favourite ones. Of course, because they were in their day, heretical because they updated it to the Second World War.
