Michael Strevens on explanation and modern scientific knowledge
Thing in itself
Is There Explanatory Independence?
To really fully understand something, you have to appreciate the roots of the processes at work and fundamental physics. Now that doesn't mean you have to know the complete fundamental physical story, at least I hope not because we almost never have that. But it's certainly true that scientific understanding often takes that form - partly because sometimes you just don't know what the mechanism is but also often because there's a lot of division of labor in the scientific enterprise. We should always have a full back position in philosophy fortunately there is partial understanding so some of us more on top than others.
