The Romans Used a Ten Month Lunar Calendar
The romans used a ten lunar month year with an additional winter period that was not even part of the calendar. This explains some of the names of the months, such as septem, october, november and december. The first six months were called martius after the roman god mars. And since the first month came at the beginning of spring, it meant the time to plant crops.
