The Historical Development of Converbs
Converbs are basically case forms or some sort of derivation from verbalizations. They can be like sources of infinitives too. It's not unexpected that a non finite form comes from a nominalization. But the other thing is like you get a nominalization and then sometimes you get a case attached to that. That can be how you get all your various different kinds of converbs.
