The Paradox of Modernity

In his 2009 book, A Secular Age, Charles Taylor explains the paradox whereby Christian reformers brought about a secular world. By rooting out idolatrous folk magic, he says, they created a new worldview in which everyday objects were no longer believed to be invested with transcendent power. As a result, fewer people saw God or his angels and saints directly intervening in the world; some stopped believing in them altogether.
