Sally Kohn: I'm just the obvious example of our failure to think on long horizons, but my favorite example is actually solar flares. It is absolutely possible that on time scales of once per every thousand years, we get a solar flare that we big enough to essentially wipe out the entire power grid of the Earth. And millions and millions of people would die because it would be without power for months or something like that. She says there's a one in a thousand chance per year that this could happen.
