The drive to be popular, in some sense, its is probably a basic human need. We're now learning that the experience of being rejected actually sends a warning signal in your brain. And it turns on dormant d and a to make us immediately respond as if we're about to be harmed at the first sign that we think we're being socially rejected. There's something about being human that requires us to feel included. When we don't, when we feel unpopular, we have physiological responses that are pretty dramatic.
