Are You Surprised That Science Hasn't Pushed in This Direction?

I'm really surprised these views haven't fallen away in the ensuing 150 years. It seems a series of pretty easy steps to go from the theory of evolution to accepting that human preeminence is both temporary and the product of chance, not divine design. Some scientists do push in this direction. I've had conversations with Richard Dawkins, for example. And he agrees that there isn't this sharp gulf between humans and animals. So I recognize that I live my own life in a way that's completely inconsistent morally.
