There are over 900 species of eucalyptus tree in australia. Managum is a species that the coalas were chowing down on. It's relatively high in protein, which is what we all need to stay healthy. The other species, called messmate stringy bark, it's quite fibrous and low in protein. Most kip atwe coalas took a strong stand on messmates string bark. They would literally rather die than eat it. When this population got really, really high in abundance and they ate all of the mana gum, they didn't start eating messmate. And so we looked at this and went, why are these coalas starving
