David Efrem left his company, A.E.Y., in July of 2007 after the New York Times published an article that was not very flattering about him. He and Todd Phillips were charged with fraud but avoided prison because their lawyers told them they couldn't speak to reporters until legal jeopardy had been resolved. The story got the attention of Rolling Stone who wanted to write a feature-length piece on the two men. It took three years for all those legal issues to be resolved; by 2011, I hadn't even started filming when it came out.
