The gift is irrevocable, the organization is very happy to recognize him in his community. With the right trust work, you can still get at some of that money. Donor advised funds are very, very easy to set up. You don't need a bunch of money in order to do it. A donor advised fund allows you to put your appreciated stock into one and have full amount go to charity.
