The Importance of Versioning

Using versioning and having dependency management set up is on my list of minimum required things for a dev team. All all things will build with a version number from the first commit. And we put a bunch of stuff in place so that that's essentially invisible as an engineer, you can start a new module and it'll get versioned automatically. But what are you calling this externally? Completely divorced from what the actual code says,. Like go look at the history of Windows releases and then what actually would come out if you typed version at the command prompt across Windows releases?"
