The Limits of Our Knowledge in General Relativity and Quantum Theory
What a singularity is, physically, is representative of the limits of our knowledge in both general relativity and quantum theory. It's something that all of the matter and energy contained within the black hole is stretched into a zero or one-dimensional singularity. This doesn't mean there won't be some additional new physics that goes beyond what general relativity tells us. But until then, all we know is that the laws governing particles matter, energy, as well as space and time, break down.
