The Future of Bat Detection

There are some commercial tools available, but they're not very open source. They can't really tell the different types of bat calls apart from each other. And it's difficult to tell what species they are as well. So we've teamed up with astronomers and we're using a project called Zuniverse. It's called Bat Detective. What would be really great is having systems like a smartphone that you could take into the field. But this isn't straightforward at all. We're working with computer scientists and statisticians at University College London, Warwick University to come up with new tools. This is really pushing the boundaries of what's possible with computer science and for statistical methods available now.
