Heart Removal in Early Christian Europe
In medieval and post medieval Christian Europe, straightforward burial of the body hole with flesh intact was the norm. This could be connected in part to Christian beliefs about the afterlife. Most Christians believe that their immaterial soul separates from the body and goes off to live in heaven with God for eternity. But this is not what the earliest Christians by and large believed.
