Melissa: I hear a lot about nonsense word fluency as being a predictor of future reading ability. Can you talk a bit about that? Margie: Yes. So we want to use nonsenseword fluency. We don't want to teach nonsense word reading, but we want to see if students are applying those phonemic awareness skills that we talked about. Melissa: What often happens is if our students don't have this understanding of phonemic awareness, nobody's clued them into our language having this internal structure.
